Spike Jones was a comic genius. He developed a magnificently trained organisation, which with split second timing, exceptional instrumental technique and excellent mimicry, created marvellous takeoffs on other musical groups, as well as wildly imaginative and original routines of his own. However, there was definately method to Spike's madness. The typical Spike Jones record initially dazzles us by the wide variety of strange noises he uses. Closer listening reveals that screams somehow blend with strings to produce the desired line of melody. Cuckoos, swanee whistles and klaxon horns somehow gel with trumpets. Jones' success was achieved by his ability to contrast the orthodox and the ludicrous in a balanced manner. All to create perfect musical mayhem.
